RN/Registered Nurse Manager - Behavioral Health

POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating all phases of nursing care provided on each program. Determines staffing requirements and material resources necessary to provide care to the patients for each program. Provides supervision of, assesses and evaluates the competence and performance of the nursing personnel. Participate in the recruitment and community education process. Responsible for ensuring coordinated deliver of consumer care in accordance with established standards of care, mental health practice and facility policy, goals and objectives. The Nurse Manager may on occasion be responsible for working the unit as the Charge Nurse.
SPECIFIC ELEMENTS AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Consistent with the ANA/APNA Scope and Standards of Practice for Psychiatric Mental Health Nurses, duties will include but are not limited to:

  1. Demonstrates expertise in mental health promotion and maintenance of high quality, comprehensive patient care.
  2. Assumes responsibility for the counseling and evaluation of nursing staff in an objective, consistent and timely manner.
  3. Anticipates and resolves staff conflict at the program level.
  4. Provides direct supervision, guidance and support to nursing staff utilizing effective communication skills to address issues and seek feedback from staff.
  5. Ensure nursing staff assignments for 24-hour coverage occurs on a daily basis
  6. Maintains appropriate staffing patterns with the guidelines for assigned program to ensure optimum patient care and understanding FTE requirements for program and hospital.
  7. Works effectively with the Program Director and Medical Director to monitor and evaluate program standards and guidelines.
  8. Functions as liaison between physicians and nursing staff to ensure optimum patient care.
  9. Demonstrates ability to develop and maintain open working relationships with all hospital employees.
  10. Assists with referral development and community education activities as requested by the Program Director.
  11. Monitors and ensures compliance with policies and procedures.
  12. Responsible for maintaining and upgrading knowledge in psychiatric nursing by engaging activities that enhances current knowledge.
  13. Attend required hours of in-services per year.
  14. Completes all required competencies in a timely manner.
  15. Collaborate with HR Department to address ongoing performance issues and ensure appropriate documentation is kept in employee files
  16. Ensure all staff are in compliance with hospital-wide and behavioral health competencies and provide ongoing assessments to validate competencies
  17. Provides and/or supervises provision of behavioral health care interventions utilizing the least restrictive interventions.
  18. Administers and/or assures appropriate medication administration using the 5 rights of medication administration. Ensure accurate medication administration documentation including accurate documentation and signatures on controlled substance forms. Identifies trends with medication, or documentation errors and facilitates corrective action.
  19. Provides for provision of safety measures for patients, visitors and staff. Assures all staff perform routine and special safety checks and manage and check hazards according to policy.
  20. Actively participates in quality management activities including facilitating corrective action for operational, staff or quality concern situations requiring immediate attention and/or timely reporting of same.
  21. Assumes responsibility for completing all mandatory educational, PPD, CPR, CPI and RN licensure requirements within designated time frame and for providing written verification of same for filing.
  22. Uses the Meditech order entry system for all functions utilized including, but not limited to, entering admission data, transfers, discharges, orders for diagnostic testing, accessing results of diagnostic testing and sending messages to other departments. Routinely accesses e-mail to read messages.
  23. Demonstrates knowledge of, and follows policy/procedure, and regulatory requirements for all hospital patient safety initiatives.
  24. Reports to work as pre-scheduled and on time. Identifies and deals with staff attendance issues in a timely manner.
  25. Performs other duties and special projects as required.

Qualifications:
EXPERIENCE
Required:
Three or more years acute care behavioral health nursing experience with demonstrated leadership ability.
Preferred:
Previous, successful behavioral health nursing management experience, in an acute care setting. Previous experience in assigned behavioral health specialty area: i.e. Child, Adolescent, Adult, Geropsych, or CD.
ANCC certification in Psych Mental Health Nursing.
EDUCATION
Required:
Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing, Minimal of B.S.N.,
Preferred:
M.S.N.

LICENSURE
Required:
Licensed, or eligible for licensure, in the state of Virginia, as a Registered Nurse (RN)

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
